Project description
Background
In Germany several different data producers offer access to business microdata for scientific purposes. Related to the KombiFiD project these are
- Federal Statistical Office
- Statistical Offices of the German Länder
- Federal Employment Agency
- Deutsche Bundesbank
Mostly data access is arranged by the data producers own research data centers (RDC). But until now no institution combined these different single datasets beyond the borders of the data producers. This is what the KombiFiD project aims to do.
Targets
- Generating a unique business microdataset
- Providing an enhanced information background for entrepreneurial decision-making
- Reducing respondent burden for businesses in official surveys and notification procedures
The KomibFiD project is set up as a feasibility study. First it should evaluate the matching possibility, second the additional benefit the resulting KombiFiD dataset has compared to the single starting datasets.
After the single datasets are combined, researches will get controlled access to the new KombiFiD dataset. Their research results should give new insight into various research topics. Beside this they can be used by single employers as an enhanced information background for their own entrepreneurial decision-making.
If the KombiFiD project found the data matching a feasible thing to do then this would give reason to think about a permanent matching of the data. The results of the project could give impulse for a long-term change of the regulatory framework. The permanent matching could also come along with a possible reduction of respondent burden. Nowadays businesses in Germany are legally obligated to take part in lots of different official surveys and notification procedures. Sometimes they have to report the same information several times. Combining these datasets could come along with the possibility of dropping some of the redundant questions.
Timetable
KombiFiD has started in January 2008 and will run until the end of 2010. The survey in which businesses were asked for their permission of matching their data took place in spring 2009. The first release of the KombiFiD dataset is expected at the beginning of 2011.
