The IAB/ZEW Start-up Panel (formerly KfW/ZEW Start-up Panel) is an annual panel survey that enables in-depth analyses of the development of newly founded enterprises and their probability of survival and failure. Due to the high number of companies included per survey wave (up to 6,000), the panel also has great potential for cross-sectional analyses.
The great analysis potential is also based on the fact that the start-up panel contains a disproportionately high share (up to 50%) of start-ups from high-tech industries. This allows for highly differentiated analyses of these companies, which are considered particularly important for the dynamics and international competitiveness of economies.
The start-up panel is a cooperation project between the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and the Verband der Vereine Creditreform. The annual survey is based on a random sample from the Mannheim Enterprise Panel (MUP) stratified by industries and years of establishment. ZEW Research Data Centre (ZEW-FDZ) provides the data as well as the corresponding documentation to the scientific community.
