Editorial: Introduction to special issue "Firms and employees"
Abstract
"One of the most interesting developments in labour economics in the past decade has been the new ability to study both the demand and the supply side of the labour market. This ability has led to important new insights ranging from the role of the firm in wage determination, to the characteristics of job and career ladders, to an evolving understanding about the importance of social networks. This special issue of Labour Economics results from a conference1 that was planned to bring together researchers from the two study fields and create what we hope will be an ongoing dialog. The seven papers were chosen to provide a sense of that dialog to the readers of Labour Economics; a companion NBER/University of Chicago volume entitled 'The Analysis of Firms and Employees: Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches' edited by the organizers of the conference, will be published at the same time as this volume."
