Abstract

The research on migration and the integration of immigrants into labor markets, the education system and the society is limited in Germany by the available data. In particular, micro data which comprise the migration-, employment- and education histoy of individuals including that in the sending countries are missing. In addition, the migration status is not or not completely covered in many data sets. These deficits motivate the project: It is planned to create a longitudinal micro dataset which links survey data with the administrative register data of the Federal Employment Services (BA). The latter data covers the individual employment and benefit recipient history as well as spells from the job seeker file. By this means we develop a unique data set for migration which is especially suitable for labor market analyses. The main contents of the survey are the following complexes: The migration status and the migration biography, the employment biography and other relevant labor market variables, the education biography, wealth and earnings, the household-, family- and social context, other information relevant for migration such as remittances and finally information on life satisfaction and cultural and other values. The sample will contain about 1.500 households and 2.000 persons. A cooperation with the German Socia-economic Panel will add another 1.500 households and 2.000 persons to the sample, such that the entire sample will consist of about 3.000 households and 4.000 persons. The sample will be drawn out of the administrative register data from the Federal Employment Services. We plan at present three waves, the first wave is scheduled to go in the filed in 2013.
