Telefon oder Web: Moduspräferenz und modusbedingtes Antwortverhalten in einer Beschäftigtenerhebung

Abstract

"This paper addresses the effect of the survey mode on selection and response behavior of the respondents within the Linked Personnel Panel (LPP). Data collection was done by telephone in the first three waves and by telephone and via the Internet from wave four onward. The comparison begins with an analysis of mode preference in terms of sociodemographic factors of the respondents. Subsequently, the influence of survey mode on linkage consent is addressed. The impact of the modified consent question and placement (within the questionnaire) is also addressed. Furthermore, the influence of the mode on the response behavior during the survey is investigated. Differences in participation and response propensity, as well as in relation to indicators of random responses, are considered. The findings can be summarized into two points. First, people surveyed by telephone and over the Internet differ in their sociodemographic characteristics. For example, people with lower incomes and those who were registered unemployed or received social benefits in the last ten years showed a preference for the telephone survey. Second, mode influenced response behavior. Thus, more sensitive questions were answered in the web mode than in the telephone mode." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
