What occupational qualifications and experiences have ethnic immigrants of German origin (Aussiedler/Spätaussiedler) brought with them on immigration?

Abstract

"On account of the fact that German nationality is immediately assumed on immigration, ethnic immigrants of German origin (Aussiedler/Spätaussiedler) are a group of immigrants who had been little researched up to now because of lack of data. Sets of data from the Research Data Centre of the pension insurance institution (FDZ-RV) on persons insured and pensioners have been able to contribute a certain amount of information because data on immigrants of German origin/ethnic German immigrants are always recorded in the statutory data on pensions. Through the concept of summarizing the longitudinal information on occupational activities in the country of origin, presented here, further possibilities are now being tapped. On account of the very differentiated method of registering occupational activity in the land of origin, an overall concept of the standardization of longitudinal information was able to be developed, over and above three legal statutes, despite two intervening legal reforms. It may be true that this leads to the loss of some of the detailed classifications of sectors, but a 14-step scale can be developed which also offers an adequate number of cases. The longitudinal data set German Pension Insurance (SUF Versicherungskontenstichprobe/VSKT) and the Completed Insurance Lives (SUF Vollendete Versichertenleben/VVL) of the FDZ-RV will in future be equipped with this summarized longitudinal variable on the occupational activities of ethnic immigrants of German origin (Aussiedler/Spätaussiedler) in their country of origin. Especially high gains in insight are to be expected during the implementation in the BASiD data set. In connection with the longitudinal data from the data base of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), a person's occupational activity in the country of origin and also the later occupational development in Germany can now be studied in parallel."
